In the final round, the 'match' for second place was won by Anand. A traditional line of the Nimzoindian led to White having the bishop pair and some pressure. A tactical flurry enabled the Indian to exchange queens whilst invading. Anand thus won a pawn and at the end Bacrot resigned as he would lose further material.
The drawing champion Gashimov managed to hold the World No.1. However he was playing for more in the middlegame, as it was him, playing Black, who had the initiative. Carlsen successfully defended whilst grabbing a pawn and had a material advantage going firstly into the queen and opposite bishop pseudo-ending, and later in the opposite bishop ending. However Black held out.
The tenth round summary:
Wang Yue | CHN | 2732 | 0-1 | Veselin Topalov | BUL | 2803 | Grünfeld 4.Bf4 | 41 |
Magnus Carlsen | NOR | 2826 | 0.5-0.5 | Vugar Gashimov | AZE | 2719 | Four Knights Opening | 77 |
Viswanathan Anand | IND | 2800 | 1-0 | Etienne Bacrot | FRA | 2716 | Nimzoindian Rubinstein | 33 |
The most impressive game of the day, and Topalov's best in the tournament was an attacking masterpiece in a queenless middlegame. From nowhere, Topalov sacrificed a piece to drum up dangerous threats against Wang Yue's king. There was no respite from Black's rampant rooks as Topalov mercilessly conducted a fine decisive attack.
